Abiraterone acetate is used in specific advanced prostate cancer settings. Regulatory indications differ between jurisdictions, so the applicable local product information should always be checked.
Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer
Current U.S. labeling indicates abiraterone acetate with prednisone for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).
Castration-resistant prostate cancer means that the disease is progressing despite androgen-deprivation treatment designed to reduce circulating testosterone to castrate levels.
Metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer
Current U.S. labeling also includes metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC) in combination with prednisone. Treatment is used alongside androgen deprivation.
European indications
The EMA’s current Zytiga information includes several metastatic prostate cancer settings, including newly diagnosed high-risk metastatic hormone-sensitive disease and specified metastatic castration-resistant disease.
Combination treatment
Abiraterone is not generally used as an isolated tablet-based treatment strategy. Its labeled use includes corticosteroid therapy, and androgen deprivation is part of the treatment context.
Approved versus investigational use
Research involving abiraterone in other disease stages or combinations does not automatically establish regulatory approval. Clinical-trial evidence and approved indications should be distinguished.
